"What makes man long for the sea?...
The sea is the place where dreams, hopes and endless ambitions
for all men are stirring. Long, long ago, man's confidence in
the future uncovered those unknown parts of the ocean.
... Well, then, where is our future ocean?... Yes, this very
universe is the endless ocean for the future.
In the future, men will surely open the ocean of the universe,
by sailing out in space ships!
The film 'Captain Harlock' is about our boyhood passions
for the future and life-risking struggle."

As a child, I watched a lot of saturday morning TV. For a brief moment in time, there was a show that featured a group of space pirates, and a woman with long blonde hair. I have vague recollections of seeing it as a child, memories that blurred into those of the Star Blazers series for reasons I could not explain. I wondered about these memories for nearly 20 years before finally stumbling across the original series a few years ago.
Matsumoto Reiji's Captain Harlock is a character that has appeared all over the place. From his series in the 1970's (which aired on American TV in the early 80's) to his cameos on Galaxy Express 999, he has always been a popular enigma. Contrary to popular belief, the Captain Harlock story is NOT a gothic romance. It is an allegory, and reflects the Japanese reaction to Western occupation in World War II. The video I saw when I finally rediscovered this series was actually titled "My Youth in Arcadia," although the version I found was an Americanized one called "Vengence of the Space Pirate." I was beginning to think I had imagined the whole thing. Now if only I can find the episodes with the singing girl....
UPDATE: The reason I could not find the episodes with the singing girl is this -- they practically DO NOT EXIST!! It was a
strange little combination series of episodes of Captain Harlock and Queen Millennia that was put on TV in America in the early 80's. Boy, do I feel better knowing I did not dream the whole thing! The episodes are rare, and soon I hope to afford them all.
